Compost is the end product of the natural aerobic decomposition (with oxygen) of organic matter carried out by decomposing organisms (bacteria, fungi, etc.) and tiny creatures like the extraordinary worms and beetles.

Fruit scraps, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, plant leftovers, dry leaves, finely chopped wood, shredded newspaper, sawdust (untreated wood).

1. Find a location: The box/container should ideally be in a dry, shaded place near a water source.
2. Add the first layer: Place a layer of branches or straw at the bottom to ensure adequate aeration and prevent compaction.
3. Add the ingredients: Add a layer of pre-cut organic waste (the smaller they are, the faster they decompose). Next, add a thin layer of soil or humus.
4. Add the necessary water: It should remain consistently moist but not waterlogged, similar to the texture of a wet sponge.
   Continue filling your compost bin using this layering scheme, alternating between wet and dry ingredients.
5. Stir periodically: If the compost doesn't generate heat and instead appears brown and dry, it's ready to use. You'll have fertile soil in approximately 3-6 months.
6. What goes in and what doesn't: Acceptable items include vegetable scraps, fruit scraps, eggshells, ground coffee, dry leaves, grass, newspaper, and cardboard. Avoid adding dairy, meat, oils, bones, or pesticides, and limit citrus waste.
